We are trying to make doing your taxes easy. Here is an overview of how we do that.

Initial Consultation

We start each client engagement with a consultation, where we'll go through your prior year return, your tax situation, and your questions, and get any necessary information from you. We'll also collect any current year tax documents that you have.

While most CPAs and attorneys make you fill out lengthy interview questionnaires (which are barely shorter than actually doing your taxes), we try to get most information from the documents you give us, and ask you where we need further information.

To make the consultation easy, we can meet with you in person, over the phone or online. We are also available at any time of the day to help fit into your schedule.

Engagement

Once we've discussed your tax situation, we'll ask you to formally engage us as your tax preparer / consultant via a written Engagement Agreement. There is no obligation at this point to engage us (except for any applicable consultation fee) -- just in case you decide we're not a good fit. At this time, we'll also discuss fee arrangements with you to avoid any potential confusion later on. You can see our standard engagement letters here: for individuals, for businesses.

Document Processing

We'll electronically image any documents you give us, for faster (and more secure) storage and processing. We'll return the originals to you and can provide you a copy of the electronic documents as well.

Return and Support Preparation

Using best-in-class software, we'll prepare the return based on the information you've provided. This process may be interactive, depending on whether we have all the information needed. We may also request additional records and/or advise you of records you should keep as support.

Review of Draft Return

Once we have completed your return(s), we will share draft copies with you in electronic form. You should review them and make sure that you (and your spouse, if applicable) are comfortable with the contents. If anything needs to be changed, we'll change it at this point.

Preparation of Return for e-Filing

When the return is ready for filing, we'll prepare it and ask you (and your spouse, if applicable) to select PINs for e-filing. We'll send you Form 8879 for your signature, allowing us to e-file your return.1

Invoice & Payment

Then we'll send you an invoice for any preparation, consulting and filing fees. You can pay your invoice electronically via credit card or direct checking account debit.

Filing of Final Return

Once we've received payment, we'll file your return with the government and any applicable state authorities. Post-filing, we'll let you know if there are any problems with your return and periodically check on the status of your return.

Ongoing Communications

Once you're a client, we'll periodically check in with you to let you know about tax law updates and remind you about ways you can reduce your tax bill.

1 If you choose to file by paper (not recommended), we'll skip this step.
